Sydney Elmore Stephens

Sydney Elmore Stephens, 74, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014.  

She was the daughter of the late James Levis and Elva Clark Elmore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles David Stephens, Sr.  

She is survived by her sons, Charles David Stephens, Jr. and his wife Cindy of Roanoke Rapids and John Mark Stephens of Raleigh, NC; one brother, James “Jack” Elmore, Jr. and wife Rachel of Lawrenceville, GA; one sister, Billie Kinard and husband Frank of Easley, SC; and several nieces and nephews.

Chapel Services will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 11:00 am at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC officiated by Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Michael Kinard.  Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anderson, SC officiated by Rev. Michael Kinard.

The family will receive family and friends at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Monday, July 14, 2014.  

The family would like to express their thanks for the love and care provided by Carolina Rest Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to be made to the Bus Ministry at Calvary Baptist Church, 1405 Bolling Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Mark Lee Carver

Mark Lee Carver of Decatur, GA passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014.

Mark was a beloved father, friend, graduate of Druid Hills High School ('79), popular DHHS soccer coach, captain of his ALTA tennis team, and a loyal citizen of the Bulldog Nation.

Mark loved nature and often went camping in North Georgia. Mark was a people-person, always in high spirits, the life of the party.                                                                

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite (Bonnie) Carver; his children, Owen Carver and Amanda Carver; his sister, Bonny Bowling; brothers, Scott Carver, Craig Carver and Brett Carver; and his mother, Norma Carver. 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15 at 2:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany on Ponce De Leon Ave. The family will received friends on Monday, July 14 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home on North Decatur Rd.

Graveside Service will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Ann Crowder Vickstrom 83, of Summerfield, Florida formerly of Lake Gaston died Wednesday May 7, 2014.

Surviving is her husband Donald Emil Vickstrom; her daughters Lynn Vickstrom of Ruskin, Florida and Donna Walter and her, husband George of High Point, NC; sons Dan Vickstrom and his wife, Ann of St Petersburg, Florida and Doug Vickstrom and his wife, Sharon of Beaver Dam, Virginia. 

Funeral Services will be held Monday May 19, 2104 at 11:00 A.M. at Calvary United Methodist Church in Littleton with Rev. Stan Lewis, Rev. Jim Pearson and Rev. Hunter Preston officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday May 18, 2014 from 3-4:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

James 'Jim' Daughtry Bailey

James “ Jim “ Daughtry Bailey 74, of Roanoke Rapids went to be with the Lord Saturday May 17, 2014.

Jim was born in Roanoke Rapids on March 12, 1940. He was the son of the late Paul Edward and Alice Vaughan Bailey. He was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law Jean King and two brother-in-laws Bob Ashby and Roscoe Wrenn.

Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, deacon and a friend to all. He loved his family, grandsons, fishing, hunting and golf. Jim was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids high school. He served his Country in the United States Air Force.

He started working at J. P. Stevens 1965. He worked in the textile industry for many years and retired from the Bibb Company. After his retirement he began selling cars for many years. He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church, the Lions club and served on the board of the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District, and formerly served on various boards in Roanoke Rapids.

Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years,  Barbara “ Bobbie” Farmer Bailey; their daughter Debbie B. Hargrove and her husband Mike of Roanoke Rapids; his grandsons Jordan and Spenser Hargrove; two sisters Joan Wrenn of Plant City Florida and Paula Emerick and her husband Ron of Wexford, PA; two sister-in-laws  Carolyn Ashby, Ann Harris and her husband Alonza both of Roanoke Rapids; brother-in-law Goody King of Roanoke Rapids; several cousins, nieces, nephews whom he loved very much.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday May 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of Flowers memorial donations may be made to Rosemary Baptist Church 936 Jackson Street Roanoke Rapid

Joe Vance Overcash

Joe Vance Overcash 69, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday May 17, 2014 with his family by his side.

Joe was the son of the late Howard S. and Clara Brown Overcash.   

Joe served his Country in the United States Marine Corp. He was retired from Wachovia Bank.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Fleming Overcash; two daughters, Cher Cannon and her husband, Joey and Dawn Rowland and her husband, Walt both of Kinston; his son Joe V. Overcash, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Lewisville; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday May 20, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Bell officiating.

Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The flag in front of the Funeral Home flew at half-staff in honor of Mr. Overcash’s service to his Country.

 

Helen Adams Poindexter

Helen (Adams) Poindexter

Helen Adams Poindexter, 84, of Roanoke Rapids, died May 23, 2014 at her home after a long illness.

She was a lifelong resident of the city and was born December 19, 1929 to the late James Rufus Adams and Miverna Finch Hux and was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Albert Meriweather Poindexter. 

She loved traveling, music, reading, dancing, golf, painting, and making crafts. Throughout her life, she enjoyed a very special bond with a few individual cats. Helen was employed as a silk screen painter for J.P. Stevens and carried that skill into a hobby of oil painting and other artistic endeavors. During her daughters' early years, she worked in the cafeteria at W.L. Manning Elementary School and worked her way up to manager.

She is survived by her partner of 27 years, Edward A. Harper, Sr. of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Lisa Strawn and husband, David of Clermont, GA and Cheryl Jenkins and husband, Ed of Dumfries, VA; sister, Margaret Shearin of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Bill Adams of Williamston, NC; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 PM on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids which is handling the arrangements. The funeral service will follow the visitation in the Askew Chapel at 2:30 PM with Dr. Ed Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Community Home Care and Hospice of Roanoke Rapids for their expertise and kindness during her final battle with COPD.

Dr. Hector Chan Manlapas

Dr. Hector Chan Manlapas of Roswell, Ga. formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday March 22, 2014, in Roswell with his family by his side.

He was born, on December 21, 1939, in Camarines Paracales, Philippines , to the late Dr. Segunda Chan Manlapas and Dr. Hermenegildo Manlapas. Dr. Manlapas was a long time resident of Roanoke Rapids and was with Halifax Medical specialist for many years. He was a member of St John the Baptist Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne Kearse Manlapas;  his daughters, Katherine Chan Manlapas of Gold Valley, Minn; Mary Ruth Manlapas of Alpharetta, Ga.; his sons Michael Paul Manlapas of Roswell, Ga.; Mark Andrew Manlapas  of Atlanta, Ga.; five grand children, Chan, Emma, Jarrett, Keira and Sammy; his sister Dr. Flordeliza Florendo and family.

A memorial service will be held Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Pius Wekesa officiating.

A reception will be held in the Parish Hall immediately following the service. All are invited.

Thomas Lewis Camp

Thomas Lewis Camp 87, of Roanoke Rapids died Wednesday May 28, 2014 surrounded by his family.

Thomas a native of Northampton County was the son of the late William Hinton and Odessa Rowell Camp. He was also preceded in death by his wife Delores Riggan Camp; sister Marie Woodruff and his brothers Gordon, William, Henry, Graham and Otis Camp.

Thomas Served his Country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of Shaw-May post # 38 having served as Commander.

He was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church. He worked for Leonard tire for many years and then ran camp tire for seven years.

He is survived by his sons Greg Camp and his wife, Pam and William Camp and his wife, Lynn all of Roanoke Rapids; five grand children Marian Camp, Alan Camp, Tyler Camp, Katie Sidlosky and Casey Baird.

Funeral services will be held Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Bell officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery with Military honors.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Askew funeral and cremation services in Roanoke Rapids.

Elizabeth “Lib” Owen Wilson 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday June 4, 2014.

A native of Davidson County, NC she was the daughter of the late, Willie Ray and Nellie Disher Owen, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her, husband Hobert Claude “Woody” Wilson.

She is survived by her son Stephen “Steve” Wilson of Jeffersonville, Indiana; her nieces, Cheryl Brown of Winston-Salem and Jana Owen of Trinity, NC; her nephew, Willie Ray Owen, III of Denton, NC

Graveside Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, with Dr Layne Wallace officiating.

In lieu of flowers in her, honor you may make donations to Rosemary Baptist Church where she was a member, 936 Jackson Street Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or the V foundation 106 Towerview Court Cary, NC 27513.

Nancy Ellen Raup Christner, 71, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014.  She was the daughter of the late Robert and Ethel Mae Haas Raup. 

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Russell Christner; her 2 daughters, Tiffany Ekko and her husband, Johnny of Richmond, VA; Nancy Moore and her husband Alvie of Annandale, VA; 3 sons, Vince Civale and his wife, Ginny of Trenton, NJ; Joe Civale of Trenton, NJ; and Jim Civale and his wife Emme of American Samoa; 3 sisters, Linda Raup, Joann Nanticoke, Jonie Josefowicz; her brother, Jimmy Raup and his wife, Flo; and many grandchildren.  

The family would like to express a special thank you to Home, Health, and Hospice of Halifax.

Margaret “Corky” Harris McElheney, 67, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2014.  She was the daughter of the late Kahzo Lee and Doris Guill Harris.  

She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Kahzo Harris.

She is survived by her husband, Charles P. McElheney, Jr.; her son, David Wayne Cook and his wife, Kimberly Connery Cook of Perth, Australia; her sisters, Suzanne Durham and husband, Kenneth of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Nancy Warren and her husband, Ronnie of Danville, VA, Vickie Neal and her husband, Jerry of Ringgold, VA; her step children, Dawn McElheney Porch and her husband Matthew, Shawn McElheney Perkins and her husband, Mark, Charles Preston McElheney, III and his wife, Lindsey; grandchildren, Elizabeth Porch Gardner, Samantha Porch, Catherine Porch, Victoria Porch, Christine Porch, Christopher Perkins, Alex Perkins, Melissa Perkins, Kimberly Perkins, Charles McElheney, IV, Ethan McElheney, Allen Godsey, Natalie McElheney, Madison McElheney, Reagan McElheney; and one great-grandchild, Annabelle Gardner.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2014, at 2:00 pm at Rosemary United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Bob Redmond and are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.  

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 

The family will receive friends immediately after the committal service at Chockoyotte Country Club for a Celebration of Life.

Phillip Squire Cullom Sr.

Phillip Squire Cullom, Sr., 70, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2014.

 He was the son of the late James (Jimmy) and Annie Keeter Cullom.                    

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Carnation Cullom; 2 brothers, Jimmy Cullom and Grady Cullom.   

He was a native of Roanoke Rapids and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Phillip is survived by his son, Phillip Squire Cullom, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Davis Cullom and his wife, Alice of Roanoke Rapids; 2 sisters, Gwen Hubbard and her husband, F.D. of Littleton, Edith Jenkins and her husband, Billy of Littleton; 2 grandsons, Joshua Cullom and his wife, Paula of Roanoke Rapids and Joey Radford of Houston, TX; great grandson, Joshua Cullom, Jr.; his niece, Joanne Smith of Roanoke Rapids; and his nephew, Ronnie Smith of Bailey.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 2:00 in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, officiated by Rev. Fred Carraway.

William Talmadge 'Billy' Moore

William Talmadge "Billy" Moore, 85, of Wilmington, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday September 27, 2014.

Billy was born in Pelzer, SC to the late Charles Talmadge Moore and Gladys Bradley Moore Etheridge.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Rose Cooksey Moore and his sister Grace McCoy.

He was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church for many years and was retired from J.P. Stevens. He was an Eagle Scout and was a founding member of Boy Scout Troop 146 that is still in existence. 

He is survived by his sister Tha Jane Park of Winston Salem; niece, Paula M. Brown and her fiancé,  Paul Hayes of Leland, NC; nephew, Charles H. “Chuck” McCLoy and his wife Mimi of Rocky Mount; great niece, Kathryne M. Townsend and her husband, Kevin of Rochester, NY; great nephew, Evan M. Brown of Wilmington, NC.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive family and friends on Sunday, September 28, 2014 from 4:00 to 5:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Glenore Long Powers, 77, of Gaston, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

She was born in Halifax County to the late Eugene Nicholas and Bessie Martin Long.

Glenore was preceded in death by her husband, L.H. Powers, her son, Ronnie Wayne Martin, her sister, Maggie Walls, her brothers, Jamie Long, Johnny Ray Long, and Richard Long.

She is survived by her sons, Tot Powers and his wife, Kay of Roanoke Rapids, Jimmy Powers and his wife Vickie of Gaston, and William Patrick and his wife Lynn of Montpelier, Ohio; her brother, Charlie Long and his wife, Bernie Mae of Roanoke Rapids; a special friend, Mary Harris of Roanoke Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Jessie Medlin and his wife, Tracy, Timmy Ott and his wife, Jen, Christi Brantley and her husband, Brian, Heather Hux and her husband, Tony, Courtney Hammack and her husband, Jeremy, Lee Powers and his wife, Brooke, Brent Powers and Whitney Hagen, Alyssa Grant, Megan Edmondson, Erin Gilcher and her husband, Ryan; and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Henry Stephens officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at 407 Huey Street, Gaston, NC.

Ralph Eugene Arnold, 78, of Henrico, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2014.

He was born in Roanoke, VA to the late William Porter and Mary Arnona Hayes Arnold.

Ralph was retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary McFall Arnold; his sons, William Diamond and his wife, Valerie of Henrico, Ralph Arnold, Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL; his daughters, Danielle Leckie of Scotland, Donna A. Thibodeau and Tracy A. Jette’, both of St. Petersburg, FL; his brother, Eddie Arnold and his wife, Linda of Chesapeake, VA; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Rick Gaskins officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halifax County Home, Health, and Hospice at 220 Smith Church Road, Bldg. C, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

The flag at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services will fly at half staff in honor of Mr. Arnold’s service to his country.
