Geraldine 'Ann' Stone Thacker

Geraldine “Ann” Stone Thacker of Gaston, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Poley and Mary Stone.  

Ann was well known as a cosmetologist in the Northampton County area for 50 years.  She was a wonderful grandmother and loved keeping her grandchildren.  

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Dickens of Gaston and Betty Robertson of South Carolina; her granddaughters, Heather Tuck and her husband, Michael of Garysburg, Holly Dickens of Angier, Julie Forbes and her husband, T.J. of Black Mountain, NC; her grandsons, John Fields and his wife, Shannon, and James Fields, all of South Carolina; her sister, Fannie Tompkins and her husband, Marion of Roanoke Rapids; her brother, Bob Stone and his wife, Ida Mae of Florida; her son in law Raymond Dickens of Roanoke Rapids; and 10 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Pastor Gary Moore officiating.

David Hobart Young, age 62, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015.  

He was the son of the late William and Joan Young.

David loved cooking and entertaining others and loved his dogs, Tux, Zedo, Bonnie Blue, Rhett, and Scarlett.

He is survived by his life partner, Paul Spiegler; his sister, Susan Young Hines and her husband, Gary of Virginia Beach, VA; his niece, Emily Kamppi and her husband, Alan and his nephew, William David Hines, all of Virginia Beach; his special friends from church, Julia Ann Fitts, Muzette Kiger and her husband, Jack, Dr. John Moss and his wife, Charlotte, Dr. Richard Holm and his wife, Dr. Rev. Marjorie Holm, Rev. Jane Love, and Rev. Joseph Sandoval and his wife, Nancy.

Memorial Services arranged by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Joseph Sandoval officiating.

Chad Lawrence Geary

Chad Lawrence Geary, age 40, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015.  

He is the son of the late Andrew Lawrence Geary and Beverly Urbach.

Chad was a long time teacher with Roanoke Rapids Graded School District and most recently his position was Learning Facilitator.  He was also a former coach with Roanoke Rapids High School.  He coached his son’s summer baseball league and his travel team, “The Fishers”.

He is survived by his wife, Heidi Lynn Geary; their son, Austin Geary and their daughter, Addison Geary of the home; his brother, Ryan Geary, Sr. of Uniontown, PA; his sisters, Missy Geary of Ohiopyle, PA, Courtney Pavlicko and her husband, John of New Salem, PA; his step mother, Louise Geary of Uniontown, PA; his mother and father in law, Jack and Donna Gates of Danville, PA; his sister in law, Nikki Snead and her husband, Mark of Roanoke Rapids; his brother in law, Michael Stenson and his wife, Tammy of Farmington, PA; his nieces, Taylor Geary, Emma Snead; his nephews, Ryan Geary, Jr., Drew Geary, Broady Pavlicko and Ben Snead;  and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services with Military Rites will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.

Visitation will be at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial fund for Austin and Addison through State Employees’ Credit Union by contacting the Roanoke Rapids branch at 252-537-0019.

Ella Christine Harris Gums, 91, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Tom Jackson and Christine Beard Harris.  

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Warren Gums, her daughter, Brenda Gums Martin, her brother, Diamond Harris, her sister, Pattie Becker, and one granddaughter.  

Ella was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Harris and her husband, Steve of Emporia, VA; her sons, Larry Gums and his wife, Susan of Roanoke Rapids and Donny Gums, also of Roanoke Rapids; her sisters, Ruth Wester and Addie Mae Stratton, both of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Patton and her husband, Jesse of Darlington, and Mary Williams and her husband, Donald of LaGrange, NC; her brother, Tom Harris and his wife, Doris of Aurelian Springs; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 11:00 AM at New Testament Christian Church with Ministers Dave Morris and Daniel West officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Lucius Rives Taylor Jr.

Lucius Rives Taylor Jr.

Lucius Rives Taylor, Jr., 81, of Weldon, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

He was born on December 18, 1933 in Emporia, Virginia to Lucius Rives Taylor and Elizabeth Jordan Taylor and grew up in Jackson, North Carolina.

Rives graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Forestry.

He served his country during the Korean War in the US Navy.  

Afterwards, he spent many years in the peanut business and enjoyed his time traveling the back roads of Eastern North Carolina, where he made many friends along the way.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing with his son, Russ, and practiced wood carving whenever he had the chance.  

He was a committed member of Weldon United Methodist Church throughout his adult life.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Royall Joyner Taylor; his daughter Wes Taylor Ragland and husband, Trent, III of Raleigh; his son, Russell Rives Taylor, of Garysburg;  his sister, Mary Elizabeth Outland and husband, Jimmy of Rich Square; two grandchildren include William Trent Ragland IV and Mary Suiter Ragland; and several nieces and nephews.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to the Rex Hospital Fourth Floor nurses who went above and beyond and showed great compassion as they cared for Mr. Taylor and his family.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery, 303 Old Highway Road, Garysburg, NC with the Rev. Sue Owens officiating.

Billy Ray Carter

Billy Ray Carter

Billy Ray Carter 84, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday March 27, 2015.

Billy a native of Edgecombe County was the son of the late Willie Robert and Bessie Gray Edmondson Carter.                                                                                       

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean conflict. He was member of AMVETS post 38, a Mason, and a member of First Pentecostal Holiness church in Roanoke Rapids. Billy was the owner of Sunoco gas station on the corner of 10th and Marshall Street for many years. An outdoorsman Billy loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife Christine Organ Carter, stepson Greg Liles and his wife Kay Lawrence of Littleton, grand children Lori Anne Liles Cain of Lewiston and Lynley Faith Liles of Littleton.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday March 31, 2015 at 3 P.M. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. D.A. Leonard officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Military honors.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6-7:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

 

David Dobbins

David Dobbins, 88, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Wake Medical Center.  

He was son of the late Horace Elliott and Helen Allsbrook Dobbins.

 He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Becky Grant Dobbins and his second wife, Frankie Williams Dobbins; his brothers, Haskall Dobbins, Doyle Dobbins, Gordon Dobbins, Dwight Dobbins, and Keith Dobbins.

David was in the US Army from 1944-1946 and served in the South Pacific.  He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3702.  For many years he was an active member of Myrick Hills Country Club. He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church and was a retired supervisor from J.P. Stevens.

He is survived by his step children, Adrianne W. Mullis, Ray R. Williams, Daniel G. Williams, and Leigh W. Allman; special sister in law, Harriett M. Dobbins; nieces, Laurie D. Miller and Amy D. Sutton; and his cousin, Marcia Allsbrook Royal.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:00 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

The flag in front of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services is flying at half staff in honor of Mr. Dobbins’ service to his country.

Chester Dunn Rogerson

Chester Dunn Rogerson

Chester Dunn Rogerson, 80, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015.  

He was son of the late Chester Wilton and Elizabeth Dunn Rogerson.  

Chester graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1952 where he played on the 1951-52 State Championship Teams in football.  He also played in the Shrine Bowl his senior year.  He graduated from East Carolina University in 1956.  He devoted his career to education teaching in Ahoskie for 2 years and then worked with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District from 1959 until his retirement in 1996.  Chester was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Griffin Rogerson; his son, Wilton Rogerson and his wife, Megan of Roanoke Rapids; his sister, Elizabeth Loschiavo and her husband, Jim of Dumfries, VA; his brothers, Billy Rogerson and his wife, Paula of Roanoke Rapids, G.C. Rogerson and his wife, Faye of La Plata, MD, and Zeb Rogerson of Vienna, VA; his grandchildren, Cameron Rogerson, Kaitlin Rogerson, Courtney Rogerson, Riley Mills, and Brayden Mills; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.  Graveside services will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating.

Horace Peter Deloatch

Horace Peter Deloatch, 85, of Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, April 20, 2015.

Horace, a native of Halifax County was the son of the late Charles Cecil and Lydia Jordan Deloatch.                                                                           

He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of New Testament Christian Church.  

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Baggett Deloatch; his son, Kenny Deloatch and his wife, Tammy of Roanoke Rapids; his grandsons, Ryan Deloatch and his wife, Ashley of Greenville, NC, and Jordan Deloatch of Greenville, NC; his great grandson, Holden Deloatch; his granddaughters, Paula Crowley and Marcie Crowley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Minister Daniel West officiating.  Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

James Ollie 'Buddy' Dickerson

James Ollie “Buddy” Dickerson, 85, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015.  

He was the son of the late James Ollie, Sr. and Ada Mae Brame Dickerson.  

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Carawan Dickerson and his son, Charles Douglas Dickerson.

James was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 25 years of service and worked for many years at Harding and Grizzard.  

He also served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  He loved woodworking, gardening and working in his yard.  

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Griffin Dickerson; his daughters, Susan “Sue” Dickerson of Roanoke Rapids, Cheryl D. Woodard and her husband, Gene of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Kenney Dickerson and his wife, Pam of Roanoke Rapids; his step daughter, Angela Cook of Enfield; his step son, Frankie Griffin, Jr. and his wife, Liz of Roanoke Rapids; his sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Norfolk, VA, Elaine Powers, Marie Harrison, both of Virginia Beach, VA, and Pricilla May and her husband, James of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Joshua Dickerson and his girlfriend, Jess VonVillas, Jami Dickerson, Brandon Woodard and his fiancé, Kayla Merrell, Brittany Clements and her husband, Brandon, Cindy Rubenstein and her husband, Ira, Michelle Englar and her husband, Mark, Doug Dickerson, Chelsea Jordan, Aaron Jordan, Heather Griffin, Frankie Griffin, III; his great grandchildren, Cade and Presley Clements, Ethan and Drew Rubenstein, Hayley, Kayla and Abigail Englar.  

Funeral services will be on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating.

 Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Linwood Russell Berry

Linwood Russell Berry, 79, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.

He was the son of the late William Henry and Parlie Bell Rose Berry.  

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Berry and his nephew, Charles Berkley.

He was retired from Blue Flame where he worked for many years.  

Linwood is survived by his sister, Maxine Berry Berkley of Roanoke Rapids; his cousin and caregiver, George “G.B.” Harris, and his wife, Eloise and several other cousins.  

Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating.

Mary Kathryn Hatchell Brantley, 80, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015.  

She was the daughter of the late Roger and Louise Evans Hatchell and was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, W.J. “Bill” Brantley, and her brothers, Roger Tom Hatchell and George C. “Jiggs” Hatchell.

She is survived by her children Tammy and Wally Spragins of Roanoke Rapids, Sheri and Ray Rightmyer of  Littleton, Stan Brantley of Roanoke Rapids; her brother, Major and Corrye Hatchell of Lake Gaston; her grandchildren, Nycole Brantley, Nick Brantley, Kristofer and Brittany Spragins, Kevin and Alice Spragins, Rachel Louise Rightmyer, and Sarah Kathryn Rightmyer; her great grandchildren, Kayla Casper and Kyle Spragins; many nieces and nephews and her Bayberry family.

Mary Kathryn was a graduate of the class of 1953 of Roanoke Rapids High School.  She worked for Rightmyer Machine Rentals for 25 years, was an active member of Stanley White Presbyterian Church where she served as Presbyterian Women’s Treasurer, prepared communion, and made paraments and banners. 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Stanley White Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Brunk officiating.  Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.  

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 18, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services and other times at 105 Steeplechase Run, Roanoke Rapids.

Sophie Theresa Sokel Shields, 91, of Westhampton Beach, NY passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Hampton Manor in Gaston, NC.  

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie Mazanik Sokel.  

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Shields.

She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Shields Baust of Henrico; her sister Stella Ogiejko of Westhampton Beach, NY; her niece, Mariann Platt; and her nephews, Joseph and Michael Ogiejko.

 Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 31 Ebony Road, Ebony, VA 23845 with Father Anthony Mpungu officiating.

Ginger Leigh Westbrook Foley

Ginger Leigh Westbrook Foley, 54, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Foley; her daughter, Laura Foley of Roanoke Rapids; her son WO1 Brad Foley, US Army, of Roanoke Rapids; her parents James and Esther Westbrook of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers, Jimmy Westbrook and his wife, Barbara of Rolesville, Terry Westbrook and his wife, Debra of Fuquay Varina; and a special cousin, Donna Reams of Nashville, NC.

Ginger was a 1978 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School and she attended East Carolina University.  She was a very talented artist, photographer, loved scrapbooking, and had a love for animals.  She was a lifelong member of Rosemary United Methodist Church and served as a former youth director there impacting the lives of many.  She also made a great impact as the Cheerleading Coach at Halifax Academy.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Rosemary United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Redmond officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.  

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 29, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Janice Cooke Patterson

Janice Cooke Patterson

Janice Cooke Patterson, age 75, died June 2, 2015 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.  

A native of Durham County, she was born in Durham on November 10, 1939 to the late Burke M. and Madelein S. Cooke.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Gail Cooke.

Janice was a graduate of Durham High School, Kennedy Commercial School and attended Elon College, where she majored in Music.  She was employed as a Medical Secretary at Duke University Medical Center and served as Organist for Yates Baptist Church and Lakewood Methodist Church prior to moving to Roanoke Rapids.  She was a Legal Secretary for C.D. Clark, Jr., Attorney at Law and Office Manager for Halifax Medical Specialists, PA where she worked for over 33 years prior to retirement.  During most of these years, she also served as Organist/Pianist for First Presbyterian Church and Rosemary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, William (Billy) of Roanoke Rapids, Cindy Patterson Pittman and her husband, Harold of Raleigh, and Stephen (Steve) of Roanoke Rapids; two grandchildren, Madeline and Jessica Patterson; one great-granddaughter, Aleeah; several cousins and many close friends.

She was a constant on the organ bench at Rosemary Baptist, rarely missing a Sunday while her health allowed.  Her dedication, determination, and positive attitude were inspiring as she returned to play just 3 weeks after her right leg amputation.  Even in adversity she was a witness to her faith and along with her sense of humor continued to amaze everyone who crossed her path.  In addition to her musical talents, she loved sharing her gift of needlework, most recently in the form of knitted hats for cancer patients in area hospitals.  She loved the fellowship of her church, her knitting club, and her Friday night dinner group.  She had a sweet spirit and enjoyed a great sense of joy by serving others.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 5, 2015 at Rosemary Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.  A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 PM at Maplewood Cemetery (Annex B) in Durham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lucille Thomas Sunday School Class or the Ernelle Brooks Mission Involvement Group, Rosemary Baptist Church, 936 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870

Joseph 'Frank' Newton

Joseph “Frank” Newton, 91, of Halifax passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015.

Frank was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He had a love of the outdoors, horses, buggies, carriages, wagon trains, and gardening.  He was retired from the State of North Carolina Department of Corrections with almost 30 years of service.

He was the son of the late Maggie Botts and Joshua Leonard Newton.  Frank was also preceded in death by his wives, Helen Newton and Peggy Newton, and his brothers, Earl, Leonard and Ray Dean Newton. 

He is survived by his daughters, Diane Vick and her husband, Bill of Conway, NC, Norma Cook and her husband, Gary of Elizabeth City, NC; his step sons, Glenn Hale and his wife, Sharon of Louisburg, NC, Darryl Wrenn and his wife, April of Carson, VA; his sister, Melissa Stroud of Lattimore, NC; his sisters-in-law, Martha Newton of Prince George, VA, Carolyn Sledge and her husband W.C. of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his grandchildren, Karen Kinyon and her husband, Chris, Ken Wood and his wife, Chris, Lisa Nowell and her husband, Bill, Casey Byrum and her husband, David, Jennifer Simpson and her husband, Joshua; his great grandchildren, Christopher Kinyon, Tyler Wood, Mackenzie Wood, Zachary Horvath, Megan Nowell, Sydnee Byrum, Adalynn Byrum, Harper Simpson, and Mackenzie Hale; his step grandchildren, Jonathan Hale, Christopher Nowell, Ashley Bennett, Stephanie St. Clair, Timmy Godsey, and Tammy Vick; six step great grandchildren; five step great great grandchildren; six nephews and three nieces.  He also leaves behind two special companions, Wendy and Pearl.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Tim Jones officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Halifax.  Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 1:30 until service time.  The North Carolina Department of Corrections Honor Guard will be presiding at the visitation and funeral services.    

The family would like to thank Home, Health, and Hospice of Halifax County and special care givers, Lanie Hale, Carolyn Sledge, Karen Arrington, and Darlene Green.

James Jerry Perry

James Jerry Perry, 88, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday June 6, 2015.

James, a native of Halifax County was the son of the late Arthur James and Thelma Mitchell Perry. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Lynch Perry, his sister, Jane Winstead, his brother, E. V. Perry and his son-in-law, Wayne Lewis.

 James served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired from Halifax Linen as Superintendent with 60 years of service.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda P. Mason and her husband, Linwood of Roanoke Rapids, Dianne P. Long and her husband, Wayne of Halifax; his son, Kenneth Wayne Perry and his wife, Cindy of Hickory; two sisters Barbara Barrett of Roanoke Rapids and Daphine Ferguson of Emporia, VA; his grandchildren, Brent Mason and his wife, Wendy, Craig Mason and his wife, Terry, Brian Lewis and his wife, Angela, Kendra Barrett and her husband, Mike, Kristin Pierce and her husband, Terry, Kevin Fisher and his wife, Amy, Keith Fisher and his wife, Amy, Chris Long and Christina Keeran; fifteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Mike Barrett officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors.

The Family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until service time on June 9, 2015.

The flag in front of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services will fly at half staff in honor of Mr. Perry serving his country.

John Wayne 'Shorty' Byrum

John Wayne “Shorty” Byrum, 79, of Roanoke Rapids, fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and died peacefully on the morning of Friday, June 12, 2015 at his home.  

He retired from J.P. Stephens/BIBB and loved to fish, tell tall tales, and loved all children.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Hettie Bell Byrum, three brothers, Roy, Butch, and Thellie Byrum, and a son, John Robert Byrum.

 Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 46 years, Amarilis Faye Byrum; his sons, Thomas Earl Byrum (Barbara) of Roanoke Rapids, Matthew C. Byrum (Wendy) of Garysburg, Thellie W. Byrum (Linda) of Roanoke Rapids; his daughters, Elizabeth Ann Byrum of Roanoke Rapids and Teresa P. Bennett (Keith) of Roanoke Rapids; thirteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, several special nieces and nephews, and many special friends that he thought of as family.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Chet Rains officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of John W. Byrum to Pruitt Health Hospice, 301 South Church Street, Suite 135, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

Lisa 'Buffy' Edmondson Whitby

Lisa “Buffy” Edmondson Whitby, died Thursday, June 11, 2015.  

She is survived by her husband, Kenny; her son, Holt Gordon of the home; her stepsons, Paul and Reid Whitby; her parents, Gene “Peter Rabbit” and Vivian Keeter Edmondson of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers, Gray Edmondson of Roanoke Rapids and Mark Edmondson of Wilmington; her nephews, Dylan and Landen Edmondson; and Holt’s father, Willie Gordon of Roanoke Rapids.

Lisa was an incredible mom to her son and step sons.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015  at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Blain Given officiating.  Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services.

Mildred Smith Stokes

Mildred Smith Stokes, age 100, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on June 17, 2015.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry Melton Stokes.

Mildred retired after 38 years of service from J.P. Stevens Rosemary Mill as a weaver.  She joined First Christian Church at the age of 13 and was an active member there for 87 years.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce “Javotte” Stokes Davis and her husband, Tom of Littleton; her granddaughter, Terri Laneau Lewis and her husband, Blane of Manassas, VA; her grandson, Thomas (Tom) Melton Davis of Lorton, VA; her great grandchildren, Joyce Jennifer Lewis and Kathryn (Katie) Lee Lewis, both of Manassas, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church with Minister Bane Angles officiating.  

Entombment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Tarboro, NC.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2015 in the fellowship hall of First Christian Church from 1:00 until service time.
