Harvey Fleetwood Coggins

Harvey Fleetwood Coggins, 75, of Roanoke Rapids died Saturday November 2, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Harvey, a native of Northampton County,  was the son of the late Harvey and Mittie Barnes Coggins. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ann Coggins Hux.

Harvey loved going to the races, the singles club, dancing, and picking on people.

He is survived by his sons, Harvey Fleetwood Coggins, Jr. and Stacy Coggins and his wife Angela both of Roanoke Rapids;  his grandsons, Braxton and Ayden; two brothers Jimmy Coggins and his wife Vicki J. Coggins of Littleton and Johnny Coggins and his wife Vicki C. Coggins of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Service for Harvey will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 2 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Minister Dale Morris officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral Services Tuesday from 7-8:30 P.M. and other times at 907 Stoney Brook Dr Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr. Greenville, NC 27834.


John Stradley Watkins III

John Stradley Watkins, III, 66, of Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.

John, a native of Granville County was the son of the late John Stradley, Jr. and Hilda Shoaf Watkins.

John served his Country for four years in the United States Navy. He was a 1965 graduate of J.F. Webb High School and a 1970 graduate of Campbell University. He was retired from the North Carolina Department Employment Security Commission. He was an active member of Roanoke Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

John is survived by his wife, Ginny Butler Watkins; their daughter Heather Watkins Wynne and her husband Kirk of Roanoke Rapids; their son Andrew Watkins of Raleigh; three grand children Jake and Abby Wynne and Julia Watkins; his sister Susan Watkins Jakubiec and her husband James of Wheaton, IL; two step sisters Caroline M. Smith of Birmingham, AL and Susan H. Mitchell of Raleigh; two step brothers Bill Mitchell of Oxford and Joe Mitchell of Manlius, NY and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral Service for John will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Roanoke Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Rogers and Rev. Dave Wood officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Military honors.  

Visitation will be at Roanoke Baptist Church Thursday, November 7, from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, 4 N. Blount Street, 2nd Floor, Raleigh, NC 27601.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Todd Alexander Doughtie 48, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday November 6, 2013 at his home.  Todd was a native of Halifax County and was the son of the late George Thomas “G.T” and Emma Davis Doughtie.

He is survived by his sister, Beth D. Edwards and her husband, Greg of Roanoke Rapids; his brother Carl “Rabbit” Doughtie and his wife, Brenda; his niece, Kendall Edwards and Christopher Nowell of Roanoke Rapids; two nephews, Ryan L. Edwards and Shane D. Doughtie, both of Roanoke Rapids; and a great nephew, Landen Nowell; and special friends, R.C. and Wendy Riggan of Roanoke Rapids.  

Graveside Services for Todd will be held Friday, November 8, 2013 at 2:00 P.M at Cedarwood Cemetery with Minister Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday, from 12:30-1:45 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Vicki Barrow Cox, 68, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.  

She was the daughter of the late Ruth (Baker) and David Cromwell Barrow.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherri Leigh Cox.

She is survived by her daughter Terri Cox and Robert Taylor of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, David Cox of Roanoke Rapids; Jessica Haselman and husband, James of Roanoke Rapids; granddaughter, Allyssa Gates of the home;

Great- grandchildren, Michael Harrington, Abigail Cox, and Jackson Haselman; brother, David Eugene Barrow and wife, Brenda of Myrtle Beach, SC; niece, Tracy Barrow; aunt, Fannie Chestnut and her husband Leonidas of Roanoke Rapids; and life- long friend, Cecilia Martin of Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 7:00 to  8:30 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at noon at Crestview Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, officiated by Rev. Michael Mooneyham.

Harold John Baust, 84, of Henrico, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2013.  

He was the son of the late Irene Virginia (Merritt) and Nicholas Julius Baust.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher J. Baust, and his first wife Loretta Scharschan Baust.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Shields Baust; daughter, Anne B. Kohlmann  and husband Steven of Huntington, NY; son, Raymond H. Baust and wife, Eileen, of Reisterstown, MD; 4 granddaughters and four great grandchildren; his brother Robert Baust and his wife Marion of Flagler, Florida.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Ebony, Virginia with Father Anthony Mpungu officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 31 Ebony Rd., Ebony, Virginia, 23845.

Earl C. 'Buck' Sigmon

Earl C. “Buck” Sigmon 79, of Halifax died Thursday, November 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. 

A native of Catawba County, North Carolina, Earl was the son of the late Edward Clarence and Annie Lee Huffman Sigmon.

“Buck” was an avid sportsman; he loved hunting, fishing, and golf. He played semipro baseball as a young man. 

He was a long time member of Halifax United Methodist Church. He served on many boards and committees within the church and once received the missionary of the year award from the church. He served on the Halifax Town Board and was the former Fire Chief with the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department. 

“Buck’ is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Drum Sigmon; his daughter Tami S. Vaughan of Rocky Mount; sons Mark Sigmon and his wife Deanna of Halifax and Eric Sigmon and his wife Melissa of Cary; eight grand children Michael Vaughan and Jenn, Amber S. Pope and her husband Chris, Meggon S. Hammack and her husband Jonathan, Brittney Sigmon, Cameron Sigmon, Caroline Sigmon, Kenley Sigmon and Mark Sigmon, Jr. four great grand children Kaiden and Bryson Vaughan, Bentley Ryan Bell and Bentley Alan Pope; and his mother-in-law Hazel B. Drum of Hickory, NC and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for “Buck” will be Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Halifax United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Formo officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 7-8:30 P.M. at the Church and other times at the home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Halifax United Methodist Church prayer garden in “Buck’s” memory.

Ashley Clayton Smith

Ashley Clayton Smith, 66, of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013.  

He was the son of the late Ernest Smith and Margaret Finch Miller.

Ashley was a long time Boy Scouts of America leader where he was involved for over forty years. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margo Ivey Smith; daughter Erin S. Earle and husband, Mike of Wyalusing, PA; son, Lee Smith and wife Pam of Fayetteville, NC; 6 great grandchildren, Jessica Dayne Smith, Miranda Faith Smith, Jonathan Michael Earle, Kayleigh Dianan Smith, Morrigan Elizabeth Smith, and Conner James Earle; 3 brothers, Braxton “Butch” Brown and wife, Faye of Roanoke Rapids, David Miller of Roanoke Rapids, and Jeff Smith and wife, Debbie of Easton, PA; special sons, Travis Mahaffey and wife, Robin and their son Aiden and Michael Clark; sisters in law, Angel Whitby and husband, Andy of Weldon, NC, Inez Futrell and husband, John of Woodland, NC.

The family expresses a special thank you to everyone who has supported them throughout the last 18 months.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 1:00 pm at South Rosemary Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Jimmy King.  Interment will follow in Crestview Cemetery.

Dennis Ray 'Pedro' Bullock

Emporia, Virginia- Dennis Ray “Pedro” Bullock 65, of Emporia, Va. died Tuesday December 24, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a long illness.

He was born in Roanoke Rapids to Curtis and Annie Cross Bullock.

Dennis attended Roanoke Rapids high school. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp serving in the Vietnam era, ending his career, as a Gunnery SGT after 15 years, when his father-in-law became ill and was asked to take over his family business. He was the President/owner and operator of Greens service center Inc. T/A Emporia Muffler and South Hill Muffler and Exxon’s towing until his declining health in 2012, when he handed the family business in Emporia over to his sons to carry on.

Dennis was the past President, of the Richmond charter of the Virginia towing and operator’s Association. An avid sportsman, he loved hunting, four wheeling, cooking and camping especially at NASCAR races. He loved his Dallas Cowboy’s! 

As Dennis would say “ I Lordy Steve”; “ SARLIB”.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Nancy Greene Bullock and their two sons, Brian Bullock and his wife, Missy and Kevin Bullock and his wife, Tracy all of Emporia; his parents Curtis and Annie Bullock of Littleton; grand children, Lee Bullock and his wife Brittney;  Courtney Bullock and her fiancee’ Dustyn Sampson; Matthew Bullock, Hunter Bullock and Graden Bullock; great grandson, Trey Bullock; brother Jerry Bullock and his, wife Bunny of Roanoke Rapids; sister Maria “Sug” Bullock and her, partner Sue Chinn of Spokane, Washington and numerous aunts and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Dennis, will be held Saturday December 28, 2013 at 2 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. David Martin, Minister of Gaston Church of Christ and by Rev. Warren Exline, retired family Minister and friend.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Military honors.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 until service time at the Funeral Home.

Leary Stephenson 'Steve' Pruden

Leary Stephenson “Steve” Pruden, 54, of Seaboard, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013.  He was the son of the late Leary Pruden, Jr.  

Steve was a Veteran of the United States Navy.  He was owner/operator of Pruden’s Mechanical in Jackson, NC.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was an active member of Mount Carmel Hunt Club and attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church.  

He is survived by his mother, Eleanor Stephenson Pruden of Jackson; his sister, Beth Edwards and her husband Bobby Joe of Pendleton; his loving niece, Caroline Stephenson Edwards and his loving nephew Bobby Thomas Edwards, both of Pendleton; and many dear relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11:00 am at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Craig Janney.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Hunt Club in care of Bobby Drewette, 1017 Jackson Bypass Road, Seaboard, NC 27876.

Judy Staten Manning

Judy Staten Manning

Judy Staten Manning, 68, died Wednesday January 8, 2014 with her family by her side.

Judy was Born May 15, 1945, to Arlie Ellis and Margaret G. Hagan Staten in Wagoner, Oklahoma.

Judy was the 7th of 8 children born to her parents. Judy had Rheumatic Fever around age 6 and their family doctor recommended that they take her to Arizona. The Staten family packed up and moved to Pima County, Arizona. Judy grew up in Marana, AZ., where she graduated from Marana High School. Judy's next older brother, Arlie E."Bud" Staten, Jr., joined the US Army and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ., less than 100 miles from home.

In August of 1962, J. Rives Manning, Jr., a young man from North Carolina was transferred by the US Army to Fort Huachuca and worked in the same office as "Bud". Judy's mother felt sorry for that kid from NC, who was over 2,000 miles from home and she told "Bud" to invite him home for a home cooked meal. "Judge" gladly accepted the invitation. Several months later, "Judge" and Judy began dating and they were married in May 1963.

Judy was predeceased by her parents, two older brothers, Barney O. Staten and Jack E. Staten; a sister, Jean Staten Himebrook and her son John William Manning.

Judy is survived by her husband, J. Rives "Judge" Manning, Jr. their son, Arlie Rives Manning and wife Erica and one granddaughter, Charlotte Reese "Charlie" Manning of Youngsville; two brothers, Arlie E. Staten, Jr. (Velma) and Mickey L. Staten (Cathy); two sisters - Lavonne S. Harle (Louis) and Bonnie S. Stotler (James); many nieces and nephews; many cousins and a host of friends.

When her children came along, Judy was active in her church as a Sunday School teacher; in the PTA's at each school; as a Cub Scout Pack leader; and in the Roanoke Valley Youth Fellowship (Little League) program. She was active in many organizations in the area and was a volunteer at the HRMC Health Link in Roanoke Rapids. She was active in the Women of the Church at the churches she attended, Citizens for a Sound Economy and Church Women United for many years.

"Judge" and Judy formed Halifax Farmers Insurance Service, Inc. in 1981 and she worked there as an Independent Insurance Agent for over twenty years. She was active in the Stanley White Presbyterian Church for many years. In 2007, Judy and "Judge" transferred their church membership to the Rosemary United Methodist Church, where she was active until the last few months of her final illness.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Rosemary United Methodist Church, 900 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or to the Duke Cancer Institute, Office of Development, 710 W. Main St. Suite 200, Durham, NC 27701.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral Services where visitation will be held Saturday, January 11 from 7:00 PM until 9 PM.

Funeral Services will held at 2 PM, Sunday, January 12 at the Rosemary United Methodist Church, 900 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Marilyn Bullock Bernardi

Marilyn Bullock Bernardini 83, of Roanoke Rapids died Thursday, January 16, 2014.  She was born in Halifax County to Alex and Annie Pace Bullock. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Laura Pearson, Marie Case, Vera Lee Bellcross and Annie Boyd; brothers, Richard Bullock, Alex Bullock and Willie Bullock.

Marilyn was a retired registered nurse. She served for a time as a Peace Corp Volunteer.

Marilyn is survived by two daughters; Gail McLeod of Sacramento, California and Debra Castro of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Jeremy Odom, Nate Starace, Laura Lane and Jason Starace ; sister, Evelyn Hunnicutt and her brother Curtis Bullock and his wife Annie of Lake Gaston.

Funeral services for Marilyn will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 12 noon at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church with Father Pius Wekesa officiating. A reception will follow in the church Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John The Baptist Catholic Church PO box 116 Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Hattie Bradley Jackson, 79, born December 27, 1934, went to be with The Lord January 24, 2014.

Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, Lundy and Susan Garner Bradley; brothers, Marvin, Willie, PK, Charles and Dalton Bradley; a sister, Louise Caish and grandson, Lyle Conn.

Left to cherish Hattie’s memory is her husband of fifty three years, Tommy Jackson; sons, Edward Jackson and his wife Lisa of Roanoke Rapids and Robert Jackson and his wife Christina of Greenville, NC; grandchildren, Emily Jackson, Kristopher Jackson and Meghan Conn Bennett and her husband Brent; sister, Lottie Livingston of Emporia, Virginia; and sisters-in-law, Bon’C Caldwell of Tallasee, Alabama , Mildred Bradley of Roanoke Rapids and Alice Bradley of Williamsburg, Virginia.

The family will receive at Askew Funeral Services on Sunday, January 26, 2014, from 3:00 to 4:30pm. Services for Hattie will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, January 27, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dathan Hall and Dr. Julian Mills officiating.

Debra 'Debbie' Sadler Meadows

Debra “Debbie” Sadler Meadows, 56, of Midlothian, Va. and a native of Roanoke Rapids, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 27, 2014.   


She was preceded in death by her father Wilbur “Snake Sadler. 

She is survived by her husband, Gary H. Meadows; two sons, Matthew L. Meadows and Daniel E. Meadows both of Midlothian, Va.; granddaughter, Olivia Meadows; her mother, Delores (Snookie) Sadler of Camden; her sister, Vickie S. Barnes and husband, Charles of Camden; two nieces, Erin Palmer and Erica Barnes both of Camden and her faithful companions, Carli and Angel.   

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 31 at Swift Creek Baptist Church, 7511 N. Spring Run Road Midlothian with Rev Randy Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will follow at 3:00 P.M. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hume Lee Liver Transplant Center at VCU Medical Center.

Clinton Earl Jones

Clinton Earl Jones 74, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday January 31, 2014 at Roanoke Rapids Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Clinton a native of Bertie County was the son of the late Henry Thomas and Ella Lassiter Jones. He was also preceded in death by his wife Goldie Jones.

Clinton loved to ride and loved to hang out at Gaston hardware.

He is survived by his sons Clinton Edward Jones and his wife Barbara and Jim Garrett and his wife Gail all of Roanoke Rapids; grand children Charles Earl Jones, Valarie White McGuire and her husband David, Michael James Garrett and his wife Melissa and one great grandchild Callihan Elaine Garrett; his sister Catherine Jeanette Getz of Norfolk, Va.; his brothers Freddie Jones; Michael Jones both of Roanoke Rapids and John Wayne Jones and his wife Shirley of Chesapeake, Va.                  

Graveside services will be held Thursday February 6, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at Princess Anne Memorial Park Cemetery in Virginia Beach, Virginia with Rev. Russ Collins officiating.

The Family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Samuel A. Dickens Sr.

Samuel A. Dickens, Sr. 87 of Alexandria, Va. peacefully passed away on Tuesday January 28, 2014 at Halquist Memorial Hospice inpatient center in Alexandria.

He was the son of the late Calvin and Naomi Dickens of North Carolina and the youngest of seven children, all predeceased him.

After graduating from Aurelian springs high school in Littleton in 1945 he moved to Washington DC and started his printing career at Doyle printing and Cavalier press. In 1963, he founded Suburban printing service in Alexandria. He was Prisident/Owner for 44 years, receiving an outstanding service award from the leadership business council of the Campagna center and the Gutenburg award for graphic art excellence. He received an honorary membership by the Board of Lady Managers of the Alexandria Hospital for his many years of service and support.

He was a member of the Mt Vernon Lions club, a supporter of the retired police and Fireman’s association, a recipient of a life membership award of the friendship of Veterans fire engine Company 1778 of Alexandria. He served as director of Masons-Sur-Mer in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Sam was an active dedicated member of Baptist Temple Church for over 60 years, serving as a deacon, treasurer, and in many other capacities. In his earlier years he enjoyed being a member of the Baptist Temple softball team.

Sam touched so many lives in a positive way with his strong work ethic, his kind words, his gentle smile, his happy demeanor and his motivating phrases of insight. He had no enemies, he loved people and people loved him.

Sam is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ella Davis “Helen” Dickens; his son Samuel A. Dickens, Jr. of Alexandria; his daughter Deborah Dickens Dannenberg and her husband Frederick of New York, NY; two grandsons and four great grand children; his sister-in-law Eunice “Snapper” Bradley and her husband Calvin “Mack” Bradley of Roanoke Rapids; his six nieces Mary Sue Capps, Marsha Dyott, Patty Jenkins, Connie Smith, Jeannie Stegall and Pam Warren; five nephews David Dickens, Harvey Dickens, Ronnie Dickens, Wayman “Boots” Dickens and Edward Jenkins.

Graveside Service will be held Saturday February 8, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4-6:00 P.M. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Along with flowers donations may be made in the name of Samuel A. Dickens to the Halquist Memorial Hospice center or the Board of Lady Mangers of Alexandria Hospital.

Shelton a native of Halifax County was the son of the late Joseph Haywood, Jr. and Mable Rich Liles. He was also preceded in death by his son Shelton Kelsey Liles, II.

Shelton was a member of the Darlington Volunteer fire department, the Royal White Hart Lodge #2 in Halifax, seven spot Hunting club, Halifax fishing club and was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church.

Shelton is survived by his sons, Jim Liles of Myrtle Beach, SC and Daniel Liles and his wife, Hillary of Winterville, his sister, Julia Adams of Herndon, Va., his brothers, Paul Liles and his wife, Violet of Kinbridge, Va. and Joe Liles of Halifax.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday February 19, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Tabor United Methodist Church with Rev. Sid Collins officiating.

Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

In lieu of Flowers memorial donations may be made to Tabor United Methodist Church.

Eddie Ray Nelson

Eddie Ray Nelson 77, of Halifax died Saturday February 15, 2014.

Eddie a native of Bladen County North Carolina was the son of the late Sam Pete and Myrtice Adams Nelson, and was also preceded in death by his son Donald Ray Nelson.

Eddie was a veteran serving his Country in the United States Army. He was retired from the NC State prison system.

He is survived by his daughter Susan Nelson and her, husband Phillip Howell, his sisters, Doris Shaver and husband, Hubert of Clarkton, NC and Mary Ellen Stanton of Florida, his brother Thomas Nelson and his wife, Lorraine of Fayetteville, NC.

A Memorial service will held Tuesday at 6:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Rick Gaskins officiating.

Interment will be held Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. in the White Plains Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Clarkton, NC.

The family will receive friends following the services.

Samuel 'Sam' Matheson Owen

Samuel “Sam” Matheson Owen, 88, Of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 of esophageal cancer.

Sam was the only child of Mary Feimster Owen and Oscar Lloyd Owen. He was born March 10, 1925 in 

Taylorsville, North Carolina.  He was a proud graduate of NC State University with a degree in aeronautical engineering. His college career was interrupted by World War II. He proudly served his country in the Army in the South Pacific and Germany until he was discharged in 1953.

His career in insurance began with Atlantic Life Insurance Company and was fulfilled with his partnership in Proctor-Owen Insurance Agency of Roanoke Rapids, NC. He retired from the insurance business and began work with Wilkie Real Estate in 1994. He enjoyed working there and was honored for 40 years of service with the Realtor Emeritus Award.  Sam was active in scouting and was an Eagle Scout.  He served in many professional and civic organizations.  Sam always enjoyed his time at the many meetings, selling raffle tickets  and the good food and friendships.  He was known for his poem writing for the many occasions of his family and friends.

Mr. Owen was predeceased by his wives, Frances Warner Owen in 1978 and Marshall Rightmyer Owen in 2013.  He is survived by his children: Langdon Owen, Matt Owen, Marynell Owen Gehrke and husband Ed and stepson David Rightmyer and his wife Carolyn.  He is also survived by Dr. Jordi  Pufol  Mora, a Costa Rican foreign exchange student of many years ago, who became like another son to him.  Mr. Owen had five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, 2:00 p m, March 1 at First Presbyterian Church of Roanoke Rapids, NC.27870 with Reverend Joe Sandovil officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Loy Memorial Building. A private interment was held prior to the service.

Robert Green Hamm

Robert Green Hamm 86, died Sunday March 2, 2013.

He was a native of Halifax County and was the son of the late Sam Alex and Fannie May Gunter Hamm. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mary Glen Lee Hamm.

Robert served his Country in the United States Army. He was a retired contractor. He loved to play and sing country music, and was the founder of the Country Rhythm masters.

He is survived by his sons Mike Hamm and his wife JoAnne of Portsmouth, Va., and Keith Hamm and his wife Kay of Roanoke Rapids, grandchildren Jeremy Hamm and his wife, Michelle, Cody Hamm, Brent Hamm and his wife, Patricia and Craig Hamm and his wife LeAnn; three great grandchildren Madison Paige Hamm, Trace Everett Hamm and Jessica Glen Hamm; his brother Ovid Hamm and his wife Rachel of Tarboro; his sister, Charlotte Moseley and her husband, James of Vaughan.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday March 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Jimmy King officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hollister United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hollister.

The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 at the Funeral home.
